The act of self-love with Rosa canina

Nature supports our physical being in every way but not least by providing us gifts in the form of remedies, medicines and healing involved in observing its infinite beauty. It support can be also felt on the energetic level meaning plants can help our view of the world, our dreams and create life that is worth living. They surround themselves around us and once we can decode their message we discover a powerful source that can help guide our life, providing inner peace, happiness, clarity and more.

As we now approach late spring one of those stunning plants that is now is in the full bloom is Rosa canina, its flowers can teach us how to love ourselves fully ,not only for our best parts but also our ‘prickly, thorny ’ characteristics. Having a rose canina (see the image) growing in your garden or nearby is considered a blessing and bringing it into your life can promote self-love, self-care and self-acceptance on the energetic level.

For those who would like to use rose water in self-care its benefits are medicinal and therapeutic and an effective form of antioxidants.

Rose water can be used to clean your skin and contain the following benefits:

  • Protects against damage
  • Calms redness
  • Ease symptoms of skin conditions or skin irritation
  • Adds loving self-care

The water can be used daily and it's suitable for all skin types, but if in doubt use a patch test first.

To prepare your rose water:

  1. Collect organic petals from nature or your garden. For the best experience my advice is to collect petals from the nearby woodland to experience a deeper connection with nature. I personally collect up to 40 individuals petals from native rose ‘Rosa canina’ (as per image) and this act in itself can be a soothing and nurturing experience. Do not collect more than you will use and show your gratitude towards nature whist doing it.
  2. Clean the petals with water if needed and place into cooking pot.
  3. Add distilled water to just cover the petals and place the pot onto the stove on a low heat.
  4. Cover the pot with a lid and let it simmer for 30-45 mins until the petals lose their colour.
  5. Leave to completely cool down and strain the petals.
  6. Use the remaining rose water with loving care for yourself and nature as per needed.
